William Baugh, Age 30
Private, 5587, 69th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Formerly 15504 KSLI)
Machine gunner William was the son of Mr and Mrs William Baugh of Bridge Road, Horsehay.
In November 1914 he enlisted in the KSLI and was later transferred to the machine gun corps, before joining the army he was employed by the Horsehay Company and a scholar of Horsehay Primitive Methodist Sunday school. He was also a prominent member of a local football team.
William was killed in action on August 7th 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, He is buried in Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery, Grave reference II.B.17.

Postscript - Williams grave has probably have been seen by a fair number of people over the years as buried alongside him (II.B.16) is Private W. H. Short who was also killed in action on 7th August 1916 on which date he won Britain's highest award for Bravery the Victoria Cross;
